Those motorcycles look great. I'd love to see cops riding them once the snow clears (but obviously not involving me lol)

Notice the bikes are on the "wrong" side of the street in this video (probably for the camera) if these officers were actually pulling over a car they would be on the opposite side of the street with traffic driving past them on the left side...hence the right side dismount to put the bike between moving traffic and the officer
Jan 22, 2011 shemp2 Says:
@scootfreeordie As for dismounting on the right, there are also tactical reasons for doing so...for one thing, as the bike is leaning to the left, the right side is higher, providing better cover. You can find this stuff with a quick Google search.

@scootfreeordie The high visibility jackets are obviously a good safety precaution for motorcyclists in general. Officers on motorcycles are generally engaged in traffic enforcement, as opposed to tactical work, so it makes sense for them to wear them. Motorcycle officers in Europe have a history of being issued much better riding gear than in North America. We still have officers looking like they time travelled from the 40's with their short sleeved shirts and horse leggings....
Jan 21, 2011 scootfreeordie Says:
@shemp2 even if they dismounted on the right for "safty reasons" it would be better to pull in on an angle like they do with police squad cars for cover. the high viz vest or jacket they are wearing is strange also. it's like saying "high, i'm a cop. shoot me" well, i guess that isn't a bad thing. heh, heh. never trust a government you can't shoot back at.
Jan 21, 2011 scootfreeordie Says:
@shemp2 when they just dismounted in this vid on the right, they were stepping into traffic. that doesn't seem safe. the side walk is to their left. i can't understand the logic in that. motorcycles were never ment to be dismounted on the right, thats why most motorcycle have the exhaust there. also why the kick stand is to the left. these bmw's look like they have dual exhaust. but thats besides the point. hmm, if i were serving in that unit i'd question everything they teach.

@scootfreeordie Lots of police motorcycle training courses in N.A. advocate dismounting on the right. For one thing, think about the safety issues when you're dismounting on the side of a road with vehicles going by you.

On Friday, April 30, 2010, at 2 p.m., behind police headquarters on Grosvenor Street, the Toronto Police Service will announce a one−year evaluation of the BMW R1200RTP police motorcycle and an alternative police motorcycle uniform.
Deputy Chief Tony Warr will be on hand to welcome the new motorcycles and inspect the uniforms worn by officers chosen for the evaluation.
The Toronto Police Service has used a variety of motorcycles, dating back to 1912, including Harley Davidson, BMW, Honda, Henderson, Norton and Triumph.
It is important that the public is aware of this evaluation as the motorcycles will be used in general traffic patrol and enforcement duties. These motorcycles have a substantially different appearance from the current motorcycles, along with the uniform the officers will be wearing.
We want to ensure the public is aware that these are Toronto police officers.
The Toronto Police Service must ensure that we stay abreast of advancing technology and equipment that will allow our officers to perform their duties as efficiently and safely as possible. said Deputy Chief Warr, the Executive Sponsor of the evaluation project.
