Judging by his accent, he is probably in either Australia or New Zealand which are both countries that drive on the left hand side. The side of the handle bar that the rear brake is mounted is governed by which hand you need to remove from the bike to signal safely on turns. In a right hand side country such as the USA, traditional hand signals are all done with the left hand, hence the need to have the brake on the right side of the bar.

Wheelie is different because you need to pedal but Manual does not need to pedal.
