Gloves, Gloves, Gloves! Tire beads rips my flesh.
Dragooadventuretales Says:
There is no requirement to balance your motorcycle tires. As James suggested, it's more important with sport bike tires than a GS with knobbies. That said, when home I often balance the rim first, then the tire/wheel assembly. When on the road then I simply remove the second set of weights when mounting a new tire and it's pretty close. It will run a tad smoother when balanced, but it all depends upon how lucky you are with the replacement tire's quality and balance. Subjective is the key word.
Dragooadventuretales Says:
That is quite a coincidence, isn't it? So where were you when I was trying to seat that pesky bead???
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Thanks. We do still plan to get that done. It's just a matter of logistics between myself and my pal and videographer James Pratt. Meanwhile I appreciate your comments. I see a few bugs in this presentation that we will attempt to prevent next time. Stage fright I'm sure...

The softer the surface you're riding on, the softer the tire you want. Sand is very soft, so a lower pressure is called for. I just avoid riding in sand with my bike when I can. Good video, you made that look easy.

filling = feeling. :P

Great video - I thought it was particularly crazy that you were in Logan, Utah - where I live!
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Nope. The rear wheel just pops off as soon as you remove the lug bolts. The brake stays put. Easy as pie...
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Actually, the 1200GS uses a tubeless tire. It's not so bad with the TKC 80 on a fairly warm day.
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Those were Motion Pro tire irons. I've managed to misplace them somewhere though...dang!
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Yes, sometimes seating the bead is a pain, but we always manage somehow.
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Ha! It was a mccaw parrot owned by my pal in Logan, Utah.
Dragooadventuretales Says:
Whoa! I have been neglecting this video...clearly it is a popular subject. I will attempt to answer a few at a time. Balancing...not too critical, or at least I should say it is subjective. A little vibration doesn't hurt some folks, but others can't stand it. I sometimes balance my wheel first, then the assembly including tire next. Once that is done you can simply remove the second set of weights when doing a roadside change and you'll be pretty close.
flightestman1 Says:
So before you remove the rear tire you just put the stand lock the from break, and then remove the bolts and pull it straight off. It that correct or do you need to loosen up something else?
greghil Says:
Nicely done. Clean video. And I love that you didn't use some silly gadget to break the bead or mount the tire.
