Its a "W" because each bank is a "V" engine. If your familiar with vw engines, they are derived from VR6 engines. Which is a V6 using only one cylinder head. So technically its two V engines or a W on a single crackshaft.

___Resists urge to be a troll, wishes Google would catch on___ Traditional V engines have each of the two banks in a single line... a V16 would be very, very long. "W" engines have the cylinders from each bank staggered. "Zig-Zag," if you will. Allows for a more compact engine.
Apr 26, 2012 mattyrz05 Says:
So if it's layout is configured as 8 cylynders per bank, wouldn't that be a V16 then? A "W16", as the name would imply, would have 3 banks, right?
Apr 26, 2012 geekboywonder Says:
Google is your friend... at 1:00, you can see a block that shows one side of the staggered 8 layout per bank.

that's exactly what it means.

I'm not so sure what the "w" in w16 means. I hope they didnt mean it as in a "w" layout, live a v8. Outside of that, it's a very interesting engine!

That's my personal opinion. I know there are some people that don't care about the speed or handling of the car, they care about the look and feel of the car. Its all opinions.

This is still more handmade than most engines out there. When an engine makes over a thousand horsepower, you don't want an engine that might have a bolt loose or too tight. To be honest, I really don't care if its totally 'handmade', if I was ever able to drive a car with one of these in it, the engine would sure have a whole lot of soul to it as it pushed my eyes into the back of my skull. As it is, VW looses money with a Bugatti. You think they are going to risk human error and more money?

Where's the passion? It's just cold machinery and computer guided workers. Yeah it makes power, but if the feeling isn't there then it's all pointless.

The chain is interesting with it's lube holes in the rollers. I wonder what Ettore would have thought of the 'as cast finish of the castings though?
Apr 10, 2012 carlosmad1 Says:
I see a couple VR6 components like the timing chain tensioners the angle the piston has to go in and the special compressor with angle on it and couple other little thing wow how the VR evolved over the years this is just a beast.

Well you can't please everyone i'm not in love with VW everything but I have ultimate respect for the bugatti. It's a piece of high class engineering and its a fascinating project to read about.
It's been in production since 2005 (so about 7 years) and the buyers are very wealthy and very influential people so I can't imagine that serious problems would not surface. It mirrors the mclaren F1 project with such level of detailed engineering it will going strong with 100k on the clock.
