Being a good mechanic is not about changing parts, that is only part of the job. The major part that separates a master technician from a parts changer. As of yet a computer does not FULLY diagnose a problem a car may be having. This technology will certainly help in the automotive field but it is not a replacement for a qualified technician. When they invent RoboMechanic then I will be looking for another job.

It may look cool, but it defeats the whole purpose of having to go to a trade school and specializing as a mechanic with a full SAE rating when anyone off the street can put these on and do what you spent a whole year + learning to do.

not even this is so cool. i only wish i had something like this when i was working as a mechanic; its alot of pressure to fix other peoples cars, FAST. They want you to cut corners to get it out the door. this thing tells you where the fasteners are? what size? and it records what you do? the less junk you have to figure out the better. it didnt give torque specs. try changing an alternator on one of these; the cyborg thing aint so bad now is it?

I've tried the prototype once a couple of years ago. It's for real, and it works. But as some people already said, trained technicians don't need that to do their work. Futhermore this device will be used at guarantee works to check if every step of a procedure is correctly accomplished by the technicians (the guarantee regulations are very strict right now).
