Hello. I have a 1955 Pontiac Chieftain with a rear end from a late 70s/early 80s Camaro. For some reason my rear drivers side break will lock up after slowly building pressure. I have to pull over and bleed the break line to release pressure and then I can drive again. This only happen on the one brake drum. I have put new drums, shoes, spring kit, and cylinder. So frustrating!!! Any ideas?

I bought my car with rear drums at 45k miles, now its 95k. The brakes apply just fine. But when I release them, there a light squeak sound coming from the rear drums I believe. Is this an indication that I need new shoes? How do I know when to replace drum brakes?
Please help, this sound is killing me :(

When I worked in Germany and we lacked special tools we just used other stuff or made own tools. For spring removal we used flat head screw driver but prefer one with a sawed in nudge and then push against hook loop while pressing rag on it so the spring doesnt shoot away or hook ur hand lol

Hi Eric, many thanks for this video! I've replaced pads before, but never shoes, the drum setups always looked way too scary with all those springs :) Your video has made it clear in a way no printed manual ever could, so I've bought a set of shoes for my Jeep Grand Cherokee, plus the special brake spring tool and a pack of replacement hardware. I'll have this vid open on the iPad next to me while I'm working :)

Bads are for disc brakes. Shoes are for drum brakes. You don't need to buy new stuff. You can measure the thickness of a drum or shoes/ rotors or discs. You also want to do a visual inspection for damage. Consult service manual for specs.

A good way to remember how the brakes go back is to do one side at a time. That way there's always one brake you can refer to, except that everythings reversed.

Very true and the way you isolate the cause of the pulsation is to find a safe area and pull up on the parking brake instead of using the brake pedal, if you feel a pulsation the rear brakes are warped, if not then it's the fronts. Keep in mind this does NOT work on all vehicles (maybe 80%) as there are a lot of different parking brake set ups out there. Thanks for your comment.

another thing folks need to know,
when your pedal is pulsating, that does not mean the FRONT rotors are warped all the time,.
I have run into several cars, where the rear drums or rotors are warped.
Most of the time, a drum has never been turned, and can be turned to correct the condition,.
However ROTORS are best replaced, since they incur more heat than drums and removing material to correct this will just bring them to their death faster by having them turned.

Well here it is as promised, the full length version of the replacement of brake shoes. It seems my viewers have an interest in 2 things in particular, brakes and check engine lights so here are some brakes for you. To tell the truth I don't do too many drum brake jobs these days so I'm a little rusty but the principals here are sound and should get you through a basic drum brake job. A couple of things to note here, I replaced the drums on this particular job but if you have enough "meat" left on the drums you can have them machined for a lot less than replacing them. Also, I didn't get the removal of the drum in this video because of time constraints however you can go to the "Drum Brakes, a Quick Look" video to see how to remove them, here's a link.
