Motorcycle Repair: How to Replace the Motorcycle Coolant on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** Engine coolant will lose its ability to protect the engine and cooling system over time, so changing the coolant should be part of every water cooled motorcycles maintenance. Kawasaki recommends changing the coolant on the 2009 KLR 650 every 24000 miles or 3 years, which ever comes first. The coolant should be Ethylene Glycol based with anti-corrosion inhibitor and be approved for use in aluminum engines. To replace the coolant on the 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650, place the bike on a level surface and do the replacement with the bike cold. Remove the right lower fairing, black panel in front of the coolant reservoir, and the skid plate. Removing the skid plate with provide access to the coolant drain plug. Remove the drain plug and radiator cap and allow all the coolant in the engine/radiator to drain out of the bike. Remove the 4 bolts, over flow hose and cap from the coolant reservoir. Tip the reservoir over to remove all the coolant. Now, get some fresh water and pour it into the reservoir and radiator and flush the coolant system. Allow the fresh water to drain out of the coolant system by tipping over the reservoir to remove the fresh water. Secure the coolant reservoir to the bike, and reinstall the over flow hose. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to 78 in. lbs. Mix your Ethylene Glycol based coolant with water <b>...</b>

Tags: howto outdoor power sports yamaha honda kawasaki suzuki harley davidson victory star bmw husqvarna moto guzzi ducati bike scooter motorbike ride tuning coolant system heating ethylene glycol anti corrosion aluminum hose leak bulging connector water pump seal drain plug flush pressure cap

Motorcycle Repair: How to Measure Motorcycle Brake Pad Wear on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** Brake pad thickness on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650 should never be less than .040 inch for both the front and rear brakes, and the pad wear should be even making the brake pad surface parallel to the brake pad metal backing plate. Each brake pad has a groove through the center of the brake pad called the brake pad wear indicator. The distance from the bottom of the brake pad wear indicator and the brake pad backing plate is .040 inch, so when the brake pad thickness is less than .040 inch, the wear indicator will disappear indicating its time to replace the pads. Calipers can be used to measure the thickness of the brake pads. Specifications: - Brake pad pins should be torqued to 12.5 ft. lbs - Rear caliper mounting bolts should be torqued to 18 ft. lbs - Brake pad minimum thickness: .040 inch Thank you for watching!

Tags: howto outdoor power sports yamaha honda kawasaki suzuki harley davidson victory star bmw husqvarna moto guzzi ducati stopping disc caliper pads piston seals master cylinder lever klr 650

Motorcycle Repair: How to Check a 3 Phase Bridge Rectifier on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** Motorcycle alternators produce alternating current (AC) and voltage, and this type of electrical signal can't be used to charge a battery. A rectifier is the part largely responsible for changing the AC signal to direct current, which can be used to charge the battery and run other components of the motorcycle. There are several different rectifier designs, but the rectifier circuit used on most modern motorcycles and automobiles is call a 3 phase bridge rectifier. The circuit is made up of 6 diodes and the diodes are responsible for flipping the negative portion of a AC signal to positive. The diodes in the rectifier can be checked using a multimeter with a diode function. The meter I use in this video is a Cen-Tech, and can be purchased at Harbor Freight for under $10. When the positive lead of the multimeter is placed on the diode anode, and the negative lead is placed on the cathode, the meter should display the amount of voltage dropped across the diode in millivolts. When the negative lead is placed on the anode and the positive is placed on the cathode, than a 1 should be displaced on the meter, and it means the diode is open and won't allow current to flow. If you get the same response from the diode no matter how the leads are placed on the diode, than the diode is defective and a new regulator/rectifier <b>...</b>

Tags: outdoor power sports diode multimeter anode cathode voltage drop current resistance ohms law electrical charging system

Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** To check the regulated charging voltage on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650, requires a voltmeter, ratchet, extension, and a 8mm and 10mm socket. The first step is to warm up the motorcycle to operating temperature. After the bike is warmed up, remove the side panels and seat to get access the the battery terminals. The battery must be in good condition and be fully charged and the battery terminals should be clean and making good contact with the battery. According to the Clymer manual a fully charged battery must measure 13 or more volts, but I think anything over 12.6 volts is fully charged. After determining that the battery is good and fully charged, run the motorcycle at 3000 rpm and turn the headlights on bright. Place the meter leads on the battery terminals and measure the voltage. You should get a voltage between 13.8 and 14.8 volts. If your measured voltage is out of range, than obtain a wiring schematic for the motorcycle. If the voltage reading was low, than check for a open or short circuit in the charging system wiring, and also check the alternator stator, and condition of the regulator/rectifier. If your reading was high, than check the condition of the regulator/rectifier, and check all connections related to the regulator/rectifier. A bad battery can also cause a bad reading, so its very important to make <b>...</b>

Tags: outdoor power sports engine mechanics motorcycle repair yamaha suzuki honda current voltage regulator rectifier wiring resistance drop schematic

Motorcycle Repair: How to Adjust the Balancer Chain Tension on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** To adjust the balancer chain tension on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650, remove the rubber plug below the alternator cover and loosen the bolt underneath the rubber plug. Do not loosen the bolt more than two turns. When the bolt is loose, a chain tension assembly inside the engine will move under spring pressure toward the chain and take out any slack. The next step is to tighten the bolt to 78 inch pounds, which will hold to chain tension assembly against the chain and keep the chain free of any slack. After the chain is adjusted, start the bike and let it idle. Do not accelerate the engine. Listen for any abnormal noise coming from the area of the engine where the chain is. If you hear anything unusual, stop the engine and remove the engine side cover and inspect the engine. It is possible for the chain tension assembly to break sometime before the adjustment. When this happens the tension assembly will fall away from the chain creating more slack in the chain. The extra slack can cause the chain to fall off the sprockets and cause engine damage.
Motorcycle Repair: How to Inspect and Measure a Motorcycle Brake Disc on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** A visual brake disc inspection involves checking the brake disc for scoring, lateral movement and normal brake wear. To check the disc for scoring, look for any deep scratches in the brake disc. This is usually caused from letting the brake pads wear to a point where the brake pad backing plate is making contact with the brake disc. Some brake pads have rivets used to hold the brake pad to the backing plate, and the brake pad can wear down to a point exposing the rivets to the brake disc. To check for lateral movement look down the plane of the brake disc as it is turning and look for any back and forth movement. You shouldn't be able to detect any movement with your eyes. Normal brake disc wear occurs when the brake pads wear away the brake disc. When this happens the edges of the brake pad will wear edges into the brake disc, and the edges can be easily felt with your fingers. If any part of the visual inspection fails, than be sure to continue on with measuring the brake disc with a micrometer and dial gauge. Brake disc thickness should be measured at several spots around the brake disc using a micrometer. Measurements should be taken in the location of the brake disc where the brake pads make contact with the brake disc. Check your repair manual for minimum thickness.
Motorcycle Repair: Inside a Harley Davidson Oil Filter and a Fram Oil Filter

In this video I show what is inside a Harley Davidson Super Premium Oil Filter, a Fram PH16 ExtraGuard Oil Filter, a Kawasaki Cartridge Oil Filter and a Kohler Oil Filter. I don't have any efficiency specs on the filters, but you can get a good idea of the quality just from seeing the material used to construct the filters. Most spin-on filters use a paper element to filter out contaminants in the motor oil. Higher end filters sometimes use a paper element mixed with fiber material to increase efficiency, and some filters use only a fiber material. Harley Davidson filters are made by Champion Laboratories. Fram manufactures their own filters, and I am not sure who makes the Kawasaki filter or the Kohler. The Kohler filter looks similar to the Harley Davidson oil filter, so they may be manufactured by the same company. Personally, I prefer to use OEM filters because they are made to the manufacturers specifications, and are generally a superior quality oil filter. The quality of the oil and oil filter is something the consumer should be aware of when buying the product, but also when choosing a service center. This type of service can be very competitive, so service centers will attract consumers by offering a less expensive service, and costs are cut by offering a less expensive oil and oil filter. The saying "You pay for what you get" seems to apply here, so be careful when choosing a service center.

Tags: howto oil change small engine repair outdoor power equipment industrial vehicle maintenance

Motorcycle Repair: How to Replace the Brake Fluid and Bleed the Brakes on a Motorcycle

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it attracts and absorbs water. It can absorb water through microscopic seams and through seals in a motorcycle brake system, and can absorb as much water as 2% or its volume per year. When brake fluid absorbs water it lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid, and the addition of water can cause corrosion to develop on brake system components. Lowering the boiling point of brake fluid can easily cause brake system failure on a hot day while riding in conditions that require an increase in braking, and it is important for all motorcyclist to include brake fluid replacement in their normal motorcycle maintenance. Some motorcycles have dual disc front brakes, ABS and linked brake systems, so the procedure may vary from the procedure in the video. It is important to always consult the repair manual for your motorcycle before attempting any repair work. Thank you for watching!

Tags: howto outdoor power sports yamaha honda kawasaki suzuki harley davidson victory star bmw husqvarna moto guzzi ducati stopping disc caliper pads piston seals master cylinder lever klr 650

1993 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. My first bike, bought it used, 8850 miles. Just remember to paint the exhaust tip or coat it with rust protection stuff, I was going to do it the next day, but it ended up raining and got some rust... UPDATE: The rust was easy to remove with some fine steel wool (for polishing), and then I used a high temperature spray-paint (I bought it at home depot, its for furnaces and BBQ's) to coat the holes afterward. I let it dry about 2-3 hours and then rode for about 20 minutes or so. It still looks good and doesn't rub off. I'll put up a video with the newly painted exhaust tip soon. There is no need to rejet the carbs.

<img src="http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/gDfFy8OEdLY/1.jpg" border="0" style="margin-right:5px;
