Motorcycle Repair: How to Replace the Brake Fluid and Bleed the Brakes on a Motorcycle

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it attracts and absorbs water. It can absorb water through microscopic seams and through seals in a motorcycle brake system, and can absorb as much water as 2% or its volume per year. When brake fluid absorbs water it lowers the boiling point of the brake fluid, and the addition of water can cause corrosion to develop on brake system components. Lowering the boiling point of brake fluid can easily cause brake system failure on a hot day while riding in conditions that require an increase in braking, and it is important for all motorcyclist to include brake fluid replacement in their normal motorcycle maintenance. Some motorcycles have dual disc front brakes, ABS and linked brake systems, so the procedure may vary from the procedure in the video. placed a small rack on the steering stem to store the GPS; Van Wylick strengthened the aluminum stay fairing on both sides with 3 mm thick aluminum plates; joined the mirror supports underneath the fairing screen with a thick strip of aluminum to prevent vibration from breaking them;
Motorcycle Repair: How to Replace the Motorcycle Coolant on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** Engine coolant will lose its ability to protect the engine and cooling system over time, so changing the coolant should be part of every water cooled motorcycles maintenance. Kawasaki recommends changing the coolant on the 2009 KLR 650 every 24000 miles or 3 years, which ever comes first. The coolant should be Ethylene Glycol based with anti-corrosion inhibitor and be approved for use in aluminum engines. To replace the coolant on the 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650, place the bike on a level surface and do the replacement with the bike cold. Remove the right lower fairing, black panel in front of the coolant reservoir, and the skid plate. Removing the skid plate with provide access to the coolant drain plug. Remove the drain plug and radiator cap and allow all the coolant in the engine/radiator to drain out of the bike. Remove the 4 bolts, over flow hose and cap from the coolant reservoir. Tip the reservoir over to remove all the coolant. Now, get some fresh water and pour it into the reservoir and radiator and flush the coolant system. Allow the fresh water to drain out of the coolant system by tipping over the reservoir to remove the fresh water. Secure the coolant reservoir to the bike, and reinstall the over flow hose. Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to 78 in. lbs. Mix your Ethylene Glycol based coolant with water <b>...</b>

Tags: howto outdoor power sports yamaha honda kawasaki suzuki harley davidson victory star bmw husqvarna moto guzzi ducati bike scooter motorbike ride tuning coolant system heating ethylene glycol anti corrosion aluminum hose leak bulging connector water pump seal drain plug flush pressure cap

Motorcycle Repair: How to Inspect and Measure a Motorcycle Brake Disc on a 2009 Kawasaki KLR 650

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** A visual brake disc inspection involves checking the brake disc for scoring, lateral movement and normal brake wear. To check the disc for scoring, look for any deep scratches in the brake disc. This is usually caused from letting the brake pads wear to a point where the brake pad backing plate is making contact with the brake disc. Some brake pads have rivets used to hold the brake pad to the backing plate, and the brake pad can wear down to a point exposing the rivets to the brake disc. To check for lateral movement look down the plane of the brake disc as it is turning and look for any back and forth movement. You shouldn't be able to detect any movement with your eyes. Normal brake disc wear occurs when the brake pads wear away the brake disc. When this happens the edges of the brake pad will wear edges into the brake disc, and the edges can be easily felt with your fingers. If any part of the visual inspection fails, than be sure to continue on with measuring the brake disc with a micrometer and dial gauge. Brake disc thickness should be measured at several spots around the brake disc using a micrometer. Measurements should be taken in the location of the brake disc where the brake pads make contact with the brake disc. Check your repair manual for minimum thickness.
Motorcycle Brake Repair: Replacing Bleeding Front Brake Fluid on a 2008 Harley Davidson Road Glide

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** In this video I show how to use a vacuum pump to remove and replace the brake fluid on a 2008 Harley Davidson Road Glide. This bike does not have ABS, and this technique can be used to remove air from the brake system or bleed the brakes. The brand of the vacuum pump used is Mityvac. A clear hose is connected to the vacuum pump and the other end is connected to a reservoir to catch the brake fluid. Another clear hose is connected to another connection point on the reservoir, and the other end of the hose is connected to the brake bleeder valve on the caliper. The process is to create a 10Hg pressure on the pump, than open the brake bleeder valve. Brake fluid will be drawn out of the brake system and is captured on the reservoir. When all the brake fluid is drawn out of the brake fluid, air will appear in the hose connected to the brake bleeder screw. The brake bleeder valve can than be closed and the vacuum pump hose removed from the valve. The process is repeated on the other caliper. When all the old brake fluid is drawn out of the system, the reservoir is filled with new brake fluid and the vacuum pump is used to draw the new fluid into the brake system. The setup and process is similar to previous steps, only this time air will disappear from the brake fluid when new brake fluid has filled the brake system.
Motorcycle Repair: How to adjust the Valves or Valve Lash on a 1985 Honda XR600

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on a motorcycle. Manuals can be found at the dealer and online.** In this video I show how to adjust the valves on a 1985 Honda XR600. Each valve and rocker arm is covered by a screw on cap called a valve adjustment cap. The caps should be removed to adjust the valves.The valves should be adjusted with the bike cold and the piston at TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke. There are two small threaded covers on the left side of the crankcase. Behind the larger cover is a bolt attached to the crankshaft that can be used to rotate the crankshaft using a ratchet and socket. Behind the smaller cover you can see the outer edge of the rotor/flywheel. On the outer edge of the rotor is etched a line next to the letter 'T'. When the line is exactly in the center of the smaller cover hole, the piston is at top dead center. Use a ratchet and socket to rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise until the line next to the letter T is centered in the smaller cover hole. If the piston is at TDC, the rocker arms should be loose and you should be able to wiggle the rocker arms with your fingers. If you can't, than the piston is not at TDC on the compression stroke and the crankshaft should be rotated another 360 degrees counter clockwise. Once the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke the valves can be adjusted. On each rocker arm is a adjustment screw and a lock nut. After the lock nut <b>...</b>

Tags: howto engine outdoor power sports dirt bike mechanic

Changing the brake fluid is something that should be performed at least once every 2 years, but always follow what your repair manual recommends. Brake fluid is Hygroscopic, which means it attracts and absorbs water. Water can cause contamination of the brake system components and lower the temperature when the brake fluid will boil causing brake failure.
