If I let it cool off for half an hour or more, it would start and run fine for another 7 miles. I replaced the CDI box and it was better for about a year, but then it happened again. This time I replaced all of the electronic ignition components with used parts from eBay. Honda doesn't make new CDI boxes or coils for the XL500R motorcycle anymore. It runs great now, but I need to go on a long ride to be sure.

There is also some backfire coming out of either the first or third cylinder. One final note, the engine heats up fast and gets muxh hotter than I feel it should.


]]> No Spark When Grounded? Having trouble here and it doesn't make sense. When the spark plug threads are touching the engine there is no spark. When you don't touch the spark plug to the engine there is a spark but between the engine and plug. So, when the plug is actually installed in the bike we assume there is no spark, because it would be grounded.

]]> Royal Enfield - Oil Breather Video I've been having problems with oil loss at higher speeds with my 2009 Royal Enfield AVL Military. If all I do is putt around town, it's just fine. When I take it to 45 or above on back roads or on short highway jaunts, I come back to a dry dipstick and the feeling that something is very wrong. This video is after I filled the oil to the top of the dipstick after I came back from a short trip and found no oil reading. Overfilling the oil seems to have washed out some mayo-like water/oil/condensation mix that was in the oil tank and in the breather tube. Look at that nasty puddle it left behind! I'm hoping the oil loss is still caused by something being wrong with the breather or mayo buildup, as I didn't have this problem during the summer as I was breaking the bike in, even though I took it on some faster roads for short sprints (1-2 minutes at progressively higher speeds with cooldowns inbetween) as stated in run-in guidelines. It doesn't burn oil though the tailpipe at all (had an emissions test done by a friend) and, besides when I fill it up to the top as shown here, it doesn't leave puddles anywhere I go.

The /5 ( slash five ) series, introduced for the 70 model year, was a real watershed bike for BMW motorcycle production. The previous generation of machines [ post war wwII R50 R50/2 /2 R60 R60US R69 R69S ] were known for their reliability, comfort and quiet operation. Once exclusive attributes to BMW, however, many of the new models from Japan [ Honda in particular with the CB350, CB450 and revolutionary CB750 ] now achieved this at a lower price along with impressive performance. Greatest ever motorcycles discovery The /5 was available in 500, 600 and 750 cc capacities... this being a 750, thus the R75 designation [ R50/5 R60/5 ]. While relying on BMWs trademark air cooled boxer twin, the model is a radical departure in many ways from the previous models. A telescopic fork replaced the Earles leading link fork. 12 volt electrics replaced a 6 volt system. And to the horror of many a BMW loyalist the bike was available in a color combination other than schwartz mit weiss. The horizontally opposed twin [ boxer, flat twin or airhead ] with overhead valves was all-new.
